Volunteering is giving your time and effort to do a greater good without expecting anything in return. You may help the people in need, you may fight for a cause, you may share your knowledge, etc. All without expecting any form of payment. Because of that people consider volunteering as a waste of time and energy. But it is not. Volunteering adds as much to your life as you add to the cause.
Volunteering Improves Your Skills.
Many of our destination in life to find a well paying job. And every well paying job requires skills like teamwork, problem solving, task management, communication skills. And volunteering will teach you all those skills. Even your school and degrees won’t teach them to you.
For example, during the Chennai flood people volunteered. They worked with strangers, they found solutions to save people who were struck. They organized for food and stay for people. They were very young. And they learned lots of skills which otherwise takes years to learn.
Volunteering Improves Your Physical And Mental Health
Whenever a person decides to volunteering, it comes from the positive part of the brain. It comes as a hope seeking joy. And this improves your peace of mind. And it fights many mental illnesses like stress, anxiety, depression, etc. It provides a sense of accomplishment to the life of people who are otherwise struck with their routine robot life. When a person with depression volunteers, there the person is making a choice to do something positive. That itself is the best treatment for depression.
And whenever you are doing volunteering like going on a marathon for a cause, collecting waste from the beach, teaching kids, arranging a charity function, etc you are doing physical work and that will improve your health.
Social Connections
Volunteering is done by people of all ages from many sectors, many areas, many fields of experts. The only thing that unites them is the good cause. And so here you can find the most genuine people. You can find friends, references, contacts, investors for business, employers for your business. Generally our education system only allows us to interact with people of our age or our language or our field. But real life isn’t like that and so many people find it hard to be social. They tend to be awkward and uncomfortable. But volunteering breaks that.
So volunteer as much as you can. It does not always have to be for a great cause. You can volunteer for simple causes like pumping water for your neighbor. You don’t have to make a lifetime commitment. You can do it as you please. But add meaning to this world and it will add meaning to your life.
